Volunteer

Volunteers allow us to keep our event costs to a minimum and help us to raise more funds for Western Health. Volunteering is also great way to give back to your community. 

Funds raised will help in the delivery of best care through developing new program and services, facilitating clinical research, securing the latest equipment and further enhancing our facilities.

All WalkWest Volunteers will receive:

  • A complimentary WalkWest T-shirt
  • Free event entry
  • A Certificate of Appreciation

Volunteer Roles

There are a number of volunteering roles available on the day. Although you can nominate your preferred role on registration, we may need to allocate you to another role where required. If you would like to be partnered with a friend on the day, please indicate this on the registration form.

Registration Assistant

We will have two types of participants coming to the registration desk on event day. Those that have pre-registered online and those registering on the day.

Pre-registration team

  • Set up and pack down of event registration area
  • Handing out of registration packs to pre-registered participants
  • Taking donations from the public

On the day registration team

  • Set up and pack down of event registration area
  • Assisting the registration team with taking cash and credit card payments from new participants
  • Handing out of event registration packs to new participants
  • Taking donations from the public

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

Bag Handler

Volunteers are needed to help man the bag drop marquee and to process bag tags. 

Merchandise Assistant

Volunteers are needed to assist with the sale of WalkWest merchandise within the WalkWest Village. 

Requirements of role:

  • Set up and pack down of merchandise area
  • Assisting the merchandise team with processing of cash and credit card payments
  • Taking donations from the public

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

WalkWest Village Supervisors

The WalkWest Village at Footscray Park is our central hub for pre- and post –event family-friendly entertainment. Volunteers are needed to assist with:

  • Assisting with activities in the Village
  • Assisting sponsor marquee activations
  • Point of information for all participants
  • Taking donations from the public

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

Start Line Supervisors

Start line supervisors will support participants at the start line by directing participants to the start line and cheering participants as they take off

Course Marshalls

Course marshals are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of WalkWest and to ensure the safety of our participants. Course marshals will be located throughout the course:

  • Providing directional support for participants
  • Ensuring the course is clear and safe for participants at all times
  • Reporting any issues on the course (e.g. medical incidents) to relevant supervisor
  • Encouraging participants on the course
  • Being an information point for participants

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

To work as a course marshal you must have a fully charged mobile phone with you on the day.

Cheer Squad

The cheer squad is tasked with ensuring our participants feel encouraged throughout the duration of the course as well as providing directions and offering assistance where required.

Please note, this role will require you to be mobile and active as you will be required to walk the duration of the course.

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

Finish Line Supervisors

Finish line supervisors will support our participants as they cross over the finish line within the WalkWest Village by cheering and also directing participants into the WalkWest Village after completion.

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

General Event Setup

Volunteers who nominate to assist with general event setup will be required to:

  • Assist during set up and pack down of the event village (heavy lifting may be required)
  • Provide directional support for participants
  • Collection of donations from the public
  • Reporting any issues on the course or within the WalkWest Village

You may be asked to assist with other duties as required.

Volunteer Requirements

To be a volunteer you must:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old (unless volunteering through a school or community group)
  • Provide, or be willing to undergo, a national Police Check and a Working With Children Checkc
  • Be contactable via mobile phone and email prior to the event as well as on event day
  • Be available to volunteer from 7:00am to 1:00pm on Sunday 22 March

All volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend our Volunteer Briefing Session, date to be confirmed. You will be communicated about the key details to this session via email.

On the morning of the event you will be required to check-in at the Volunteer Marquee located in the WalkWest Village. At this time you will be introduced to your supervisor, pick up your complimentary WalkWest t-shirt and be provided with any further relevant information.
